Postdoctoral Position in History of Knowledge / History of Science

(Full-time, E 13 TV-L)

Reference No. 2024/176. The position is available for 24 months starting in late 2024 or early 2025 (flexible start date). In principle, this position can be divided into two part-time positions.

The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.

The position is assigned to the Chair of American Studies (Prof. Dr. Timo Müller) in the Department of Literature, Art and Media Studies, and is affiliated with the Chair of the History of Knowledge (Prof. Dr. Anne Kwaschik) in the History Department.

Your Responsibilities

    • Contribution of expertise on methods of history of knowledge/science to the ERC project “Off the Road: The Environmental Aesthetics of Early Automobility” (offtheroad.org)
    • Development of independent research project on environmental knowledge in early twentieth-century North America (e.g., emergence of ecology, automobile field work)
    • Co-organization of a conference on environmental knowledge
    • Publication of research results
    • Minor administrative duties

Your Competencies

    • A very good doctoral dissertation with a focus on history of knowledge or history of science
    • Interest in the environmental humanities and North American history
    • Ability to attend in-person events in Konstanz about once a month
